This animation is a music video for Kirsten Volness' piece murmurations, written for piano, upright bass and electronics. I wanted to come up with a narrative that would do justice to the importance of relationships that Volness imbues into the work - in her liner notes she makes particular mention on the influence of her marriage and the death of her father when writing the piece. (Duets are, really, fundamentally romantic, and this one is performed by Volness and her husband Jacob Richman.) But the relationships suggested by Volness are not limited to just the human - the title 'murmurations' refers to the intricate flocking patterns produced by huge groups of starlings, where their combined motions create spectacular liquid structures.

The animation visualizes this idea of transformation brought about by individual relationships - two characters coming together and undergoing a cosmic journey.
